Povidone Iodine solution 10%

Betadine antiseptics are among the most effective antiseptics available, inactivating all known types of infecting organisms - bacteria, fungi and even viruses. The brown colour of Betadine antiseptics shows the area that has been treated and also denotes the activity of the product. While it's brown, it's working. In most cases, Betadine antiseptics are non-irritating and non-stinging to the skin. They do not permanently stain the skin or natural fabrics and the treated areas may be bandaged, taped or otherwise covered.

Here are 5 of the most frequently asked questions  regarding Betadine Antiseptic 500ml (Povidone Iodine solution 10%):

1. What is Betadine 10% Solution used for?

It is a broad-spectrum topical antiseptic used for first aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, abrasions, and small burns. In professional medical settings, it is also frequently used for pre-surgical skin preparation to eliminate bacteria, fungi, and viruses on the skin surface.

2. Does it sting when applied to open skin?

No, it generally does not sting. Unlike older first-aid treatments like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, povidone-iodine does not contain stinging agents. The iodine is bound to a polymer (povidone), which releases it slowly, making it much gentler on open skin.

3. Will it permanently stain skin or clothes?

  • Skin: It will temporarily turn the skin a golden-brown color, which is actually helpful to see exactly where it has been applied. This washes off easily with soap and water.

  • Clothing: It can usually be completely washed out of natural fibers (like cotton) with standard soap and water. For man-made synthetic fibers, you may need the assistance of a laundry stain remover.

4. Can it be used on deep wounds or animal bites?

No. Betadine 10% solution is strictly formulated for external use on minor, superficial wounds.

Important Safety Note: Do not use this product on deep puncture wounds, animal bites, severe or extensive burns, or over large areas of the body without consulting a healthcare professional. Large-scale application can lead to excessive iodine absorption into the bloodstream.

5. How often should it be applied, and for how long?

You can apply a small amount to a clean, dry affected area 1 to 3 times daily. If you plan to cover the wound with a bandage, ensure you let the liquid solution completely dry first.

As a general rule, stop use and see a doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you need to use the product for longer than 1 week.

Note: If you have a known thyroid condition or are pregnant/breastfeeding, always consult your healthcare professional before using povidone-iodine products, as absorbed iodine can impact thyroid function.
