Here are 5 of the most frequently asked questions regarding the AsGUARD Flex + Non-Woven Sterile Island Dressing
1. What types of wounds is this dressing suitable for?
The AsGUARD Flex + Non-Woven Island Dressing is designed primarily for acute, superficial, and post-operative wounds with low to light exudate (wound fluid). It is commonly used for:
-
Minor cuts, abrasions, and lacerations
-
Skin tears and minor skin loss
-
Blisters
-
Surgical post-operative or post-procedural sites
2. Is the AsGUARD Flex + Non-Woven Dressing waterproof?
No, it is not water-resistant or waterproof. Because it features a highly breathable, soft non-woven fabric backing, it will absorb water if submerged or exposed to a shower. If you require a water-resistant option for showering, you should use a transparent film island dressing (like the AsGUARD Clear range) instead.
3. How often should the dressing be changed, and what is its maximum wear time?
The exact frequency depends on the clinical assessment of the wound and how much fluid it is producing. However, the rule of thumb is to change it as soon as the absorbed fluid begins to extend beyond the central wound pad. Even if the wound remains dry, 7 days is the maximum absolute period allowed before the dressing must be replaced.
4. How do I choose the correct size dressing for my wound?
Because this is an "island" dressing (meaning a central pad surrounded by an adhesive border), the choice of size depends heavily on the surface area of the wound bed. The internal absorbent pad should comfortably extend 1 to 2 centimeters beyond the margins of the wound to ensure it collects fluid properly and the adhesive doesn't stick directly to the injury.
5. Is the adhesive border safe for patients with fragile or sensitive skin?
Yes, the adhesive is formulated to be skin-friendly, flexible, and gentle to reduce the risk of edge-lifting and skin irritation. To protect highly fragile skin or healing tissue during dressing changes, it features a low-adherent pad to minimize pain.
Clinical Tip: To completely minimize the risk of skin stripping or trauma on fragile skin, it is highly recommended to gently ease the adhesive border off using a medical adhesive remover wipe.
